[ New Music ] The Foes of Fern release new single "The Monkey"

Artist: The Foes of Fern
Song: "The Monkey"

The Foes of Fern are a genre-bending good time rock n' roll band from Asbury Park, NJ. Whenever they hit the stage you know they'll be bringing with them the endless summer vibes, full of days spent walking the boards and playing music with friends around this community of devoted live music goers.
Matt "Fern" Fernicola is the frontman of the group, jokingly (or not, we'll never know) saying "You are all my Foes and I hate every last one of you", referring to the band's name. His endless charisma and contagious energy on-stage makes it hard not to crack a smile and dance when their music is playing.
Something I find rare and beautiful about The Foes of Fern is the inclusiveness and rotating cast of band members. In their bio they say "It’s not uncommon to have gigs featuring an entirely different band than the show before, adding different instrumental nuances to each show. Good humor, a chorus of Asbury’s finest, and crowd sing-alongs, however, are a constant," and "Fern always has an extra microphone at the ready in case someone else wants to take the stage and lend his or her voice."
On their latest release "The Monkey" we are greeted with musicianship from every angle, from the tight groovy rhythms to the wailing party-starting horn sections, and lead guitar dancing over top, it's a wild ride. The band brings a solid mix of The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, and even some New Orleans Zydeco flair. Fern drives the monkey metaphor home singing "So I'll do your dance and ill be your monkey, and ill act a fool and it'll be so funny" followed by a sweet female chorus response singing "just dance, just dance". Make sure to catch The Foes of Fern playing in Philadelphia PA on October 11th at Bourbon & Branch! with American Dinosaur, Alright Junior, and Malibu.  Event Page

"A tough bouncer is hired to tame a dirty bar." That's how IMDb summarizes Roadhouse, the 1989 classic film starring Patrick Swayze. Now let's take that visual a step further and use it to define a music genre, "Roadhouse Chic". That's where we come to find the five piece rock outfit, Lowlight. Equal parts whiskey, sweet vermouth, and rock n' roll.

The members of Lowlight are Renee Maskin, Rey Rivera, Colin Ryan, Dana Sellers, and Derril Sellers. The band is based out of Asbury Park, NJ and signed to Telegraph Hill Records. Lowlight is no stranger to the road. Last year the band went on tour supporting The Pretenders on their east coast dates. Continuously circling the tri-state area, it's clear Lowlight has found a devoted fan base between NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Asbury Park, NJ. The band recently announced that they will be performing at Sea Hear Now Festival this September, alongside big names like Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Lumineers, Dave Matthews Band, and more. (Tickets are on sale here ).

"Give It a Minute" is the latest single off Lowlight's Endless Bummer LP.  The single features horns, and gang vocals from members of the band Community Center, singing "words unspoken, eyes wide open, words unspoken, eyes wide open," as the song fades into the dreamy ethereal rock soundscape. Lowlight's signature blend of rolling synth, galloping drums, swooping bass lines, ferocious tone-centric guitar leads and Renee's crisp direct address style of singing has stolen the hearts of the Asbury Park music scene.

Make sure to stream Lowlight's "Give It a Minute" on Spotify, and pick up a copy of the Endless Bummer LP at a show this summer!

[ New Music ] Iris releases debut single "Crazy" (from Netfix's Santa Clarita Diet - Season 3)

Photo: Steven Taylor
Artist: Iris
Song: "Crazy"

Iris is a pop rock singer songwriter based out of New Jersey. Her debut single "Crazy", was co-written with Josh Hendrick, and produced by Taylor Johnson, along with Grammy award winning producer Malay (John Legend, Frank Ocean). "Crazy" was recently featured on the Santa Clarita Diet Season 3 premiere on Netflix, which has garnered her music much acclaim and cemented her artist status in the music industry. Iris is a strong advocate for equality, positivity, and Parkinson's disease awareness. Drawing inspiration from artists like Stevie Nicks, Iris strives to relate to listeners by sharing her most vulnerable side, delving into her own experiences with heartbreak and rejection. Iris sings, "trying to be strong but it's hard not to get my heart involved, I play it off but my eyes tell it all, you're all I want".

"Crazy" begins with a dreamy ethereal pop feel, with Iris's captivating vocals floating perfectly in the mix teeming with raw emotion. Carefully layered synth swells and reversed guitar effects bring out each section and add unique dynamics to the arrangement. As the song progresses we hear elements of percussion, and fluttering instruments that come in and out of the soundscape, creating a sense of wonder that simultaneously creates a sonic layer for Iris's vocals to stand out, and tell this bittersweet love story singing, "I'm not crazy, I'm just crazy about you".

"Crazy" is an impressive stand out debut from this New Jersey singer songwriter. Make sure to follow Iris on social media, and keep your eyes peeled for future Spotify releases.

Christa Deánā (Duh-nay) is a Christian Singer/Songwriter from Philadelphia, PA. On Christa's website her music is described as "Running music for the Christian Walk", songs written and sung from her own life experiences with bullying, and depression. Now as a high school music teacher, Christa sees the power and strength in sharing her love of God with her students, as she
continuously write songs that encourage and give H.O.P.E. (Health, Optimism, Power, and Experience) to a younger generation. Christa is also the CEO of ChristaCourt Productions, an independent music production company that produces her original music along with other upcoming artists. On her debut album "Self Entitled", we get a glimpse at her vulnerable, yet unwavering relationship with Christianity, and join her on the journey that shares the highs and lows of a life devoted to faith.

The album starts with a bit of storytelling through spoken word, featuring light piano and drum production."My music is a journey through my spiritual walk. Every note, every lyric, every genre beautifully blends together and expresses how I learned to love, trust, create and live."  As the album progresses we find influences of 90's hip hop flair, and highly arranged vocal sections over danceable beats. Deep synth grooves and bright heavenly layers of strings and piano are sprinkled throughout the songs. Christa sings "If God doesn't want it, then I don't want it," and "If it's not from my father, it's from my enemy." Finding peace in moments of want, remembering that if something was meant to be, it would be. On the standout emotional track "The Breakdown (Interlude)", Christa begins to have doubts in everything, describing a very vulnerable and painful time in her life. She begs and pleads in spoken word, providing a true glimpse of a real emotional break down, including shattering plates, and a voice shaken with raw emotion. Even through all the lows, Christa ends this record on a high note with "Shine", singing, "when you stand for what's right, you are a light in the darkness", a positive message everyone can get behind. Make sure to check out Christa Deánā record "Self Entitled", and follow her on social media for future release announcements.
